T here are many ways to keep your family healthy, also many kinds of healthy. As we are concerned about the body, mind and spirit, we will attempt to give you ten tips so that you can ensure the good overall health of your family.

Get Your Children Vaccinated

Immunization during childhood has been proven to be the most effective strategy for the prevention of many infectious diseases. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that as many as 2.5 million deaths among under-5 children worldwide are averted annually by immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), and measles.

According to a 2011 Report, In Kenya, the proportion of children aged 12-23 months that are reported to have received all recommended vaccinations is 77.4%.

However, this proportion varies from 48.3% in the North Eastern Province to 85.8% in the Central Province. This geographical inequality in coverage reflects the variation in the influence of determinants of full vaccination across the different provinces. In Nairobi, 73% of children in this age range are reported to have received all vaccinations, but estimates in the slums within the city are usually much lower

If you do not know about the vaccinations your children should have, ask your doctor or find out at a local clinic.

Washing Hands Must Become a Habit for the Family

You may have heard it a million times by now, but regular hand washing is hands-down the best way to keep germs from spreading. This is a great way to keep your family healthy. Teach your little ones the importance of hand washing from an early age.

Get your children to step up to the sink, especially at key times: before, after sneezing, coughing, petting an animal, or using the potty.

Even a baby can start to pick up on hand-washing basics — by watching as you wipe off her hands; and then, when she’s old enough to follow simple directions, teaching her to make soap foam and wash thoroughly (for at least 20 seconds).

Teach Everyone in your Family how to use Tissues

No, everybody doesn’t know how to use tissues.

Once your child has mastered nose-blowing, get him/her into the habit of disposing dirty tissues right away, rather than leaving them lying around on a table or the floor.

Put a waste bin/basket in each room so that your family remembers to dispose of used tissues.

Some Things are Not for Sharing

We want your children to grow up to be giving and generous spirited, but in order to keep your family healthy, they need to learn that there are some things they cannot share.

Explain to your children that while it’s nice to let their friends play with their toys, there are things they should keep to herself and not share. We are talking about combs, brushes, and hats (sharing these items is the number-one way lice spread from kid to kid); and toothbrushes. If you want to be really strict with this non-sharing rule, then make sure they don’t share anything that was in their mouth – drinking straws, whistles etc. And, of course, tissues.

Bathrooms, Toilets and Kitchens are a Breeding Ground for Bacteria

Make sure you wipe down sinks, wash basins, counter tops, toilet seats daily with a good cleaner. Especially when your young sons are still learning to perfect their aim.

For adults or older children, a food-borne illness is unpleasant, but usually not dangerous. Not so for babies and toddlers, whose immune systems aren’t as ready to tackle tough bacteria. That’s why you’ll need to pay particular attention to food safety when you’re in the kitchen.

Also wipe counter tops and cabinet handles with disinfectant frequently, and wash kitchen rags, sponges, and towels regularly.

Keeping your family healthy is not that hard if you just get into a routine and get everybody to help.
