S ome people drink to have fun, others drink to forget their problems. No matter what your reason may be, it’s important How to stop drinking to recognise and admit if you have a drinking problem, and to consider all the risks thereof. Most people who have an alcohol problem can’t transform their drinking habits overnight and recovery usually happens gradually over time. If you are unsure about your level of alcohol addiction, take a look at the list of problems that you may be or are already facing:

  • Problems in your relationships and work
  • Feeling depressed, anxious or ashamed of yourself
  • Health problems
  • Issues with the law and money problems

If you are a heavy, frequent drinker your body may become physically dependent on alcohol and you might experience withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop. It is not recommended to quit completely, but to rather cut down gradually. Some of the withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Headaches and shaking
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Trouble with sleeping or focusing
  • Nervousness and agitation

If you are serious about cutting down and taking control of your drinking problem here are some tips that might help you:

  • Set goals and be ready for change: Decide if your goal is abstinence or controlled or social drinking.
  • Curb your temptation: Don’t go to places where people will be drinking and get rid of all the alcohol in your house.
  • Keep a diary: Every time you have a drink write it down. Do this process for one month and if you wake up with a hangover, record your feelings too.
  • Avoid bad influences: Distance yourself from people who do not support you, even if it means losing some friends along the way.
  • Write down the reasons why you want to stop: These reasons will keep you motivated and strong.
