Imagine if we could live on mostly foods that burn fat? We would all have lovely slim bodies like Ajuma Nasenyana.

But that is not realistic for most of us who always feel that we need to lose a little weight.

And it is true that some fat burning foods are expensive and others are not easily available, but you will be surprised at which foods are good for your waistline and which are not. A word of warning – don’t only eat these foods. Start by introducing a few more foods that burn fat into your diet each week until you find that you’re eating much more of them than you used to.

The reasons these foods are recommended I vary greatly. Some of them spike the metabolism; some trigger hormones that release fat, and eliminate toxins that make it hard for your body to shed unwanted pounds. But take care: For these foods to work their miracles, they must be consumed as part of a clean diet. You can’t eat fast food all day and then come home and eat some sweet potatoes and think you are going to lose weight.

Most people regard it as a vegetable, although it is really a fruit. But that doesn’t matter in this case. All you need to know is that it does plenty of good for your body for the long term, and in the short term it works to help you lose weight and help keep it off. Tomatoes are low on the calorie meter, but they help to give you that full feeling, and they contain fiber.

Yes they do have quite a lot of sugar, but if we combine the healthy Vitamin C levels, the low calorie count and the fibre that helps to regulate your blood glucose levels, they are certainly something good to eat.

Oats work as part of a weight loss strategy because the amount of fiber boosts your metabolism and helps you feel fuller longer. The antioxidants and other minerals oats contain make it a solid choice and not just a source of fiber.

So people give Avos a bad name because of their so-called fat. But this delicious veggie is actually a triple-fat burner. Avocados’ monounsaturated fat plumps up cell membranes, enabling cells to better chat with fat-burning hormones. It also switches off the body’s fat storage hormones. On top of all this, it boosts the metabolism by protecting the energy-producing part of cells from free radical damage. Go Avos go!

Sweet Potatoes

Oprah likes sweet potatoes, and credits them as part of the reason she lost weight one time. It seems like sweet potatoes are great for dieting because they have fewer calories and also help you stay satisfied between meals. Sweet potatoes, baked in their skins without salt are low in Sodium, and very low in Saturated Fat and Cholesterol. They are also a good source of dietary fiber, Vitamin B6 and Potassium, and a very good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Manganese

They are known for their ability to help regulate blood sugar levels and help with digestion due to their fiber content. Build muscle and help burn fat.

A few more fat burning foods:

  • Almonds and other nuts (with skins intact).Build muscle, reduce cravings.
  • Peanut butter. Boosts testosterone (a good thing even in women), builds muscle, and burns fat.
  • Chili peppers. Spikes metabolism.
  • Pumpkin is packed with fiber, which slows digestion and keeps you feeling full longer.
