What's for Lunchtime

After conducting a survey with our My Health Facebook fans we‘ve discovered the type of foods our fans enjoy for lunch. These lunch time meals include ugali, sukuma wiki, githeri, fruit salad and beef stew/nyama.

The graph below gives insight to the most popular meals people in Kenya enjoy during lunch time:

1. Ugali

Ugali is a starch component and is commonly made from maize flour or ground maize and water. Ugali can be prepared in many ways, from a porridge-like substance to a harder dough. The main reason why ugali is the most popular lunchtime meal is because it is a filling dish that keeps you satisfied for a good few hours.

2.) Beef Stew/ Nyama

Beef stew is another popular dish loved by many. The recipe for this traditional meal includes beef with vegetables in a tomato-based sauce and flavoured with curry powder.

3.) Sukuma Wiki

Sukuma wiki is made from a leafy green vegetable, but mainly collards or kale. Kale is a vegetable similar to cabbage. This nutritious and tasty meal is commonly served with ugali, meat or fish.

4.) Githeri

Githeri is a simple and wholesome dish originated from the Kikuyu Tribe. The combination of kidney beans and maize meal provides a good amount of protein.

5.) Fruit Salads

Fruit is a very popular and healthy option for lunch. Grab a bowl, add some bananas, apples, watermelon and berries and you have a nourishing fruit salad for lunch. Add some yoghurt for protein and you’re good to go.

A warm cup of tea is the most popular beverage enjoyed by many with lunch. Green tea is a great option as it is filled with loads of antioxidants.
