strawberry_watermelonWith summer fast approaching, it’s an ideal time to re-evaluate your diet. Besides eating foods that will help you maintain a healthy weight, it’s important to consume foods that will protect you from the harmful effects of the sun and ensure you remain hydrated. Here’s a list of the best foods to add to your eating plan during the warmer months of the year.

Since approximately 92% of this delicious fruit is water, it makes sense that cold watermelon offers a great way to stay refreshed, cool, and hydrated during summer. It also contains high levels of skin-protecting lycopene and inflammation-fighting antioxidants.

While sunscreen should be your first line of defence, the lycopene in tomatoes can provide much needed protection against sunburn. In addition, this popular fruit contains Vitamin B3 (niacin), which helps remove ultraviolet radiation from your body.

A favourite during the summer season, fresh sweet corn contains phytochemicals called lutein and zeaxanthin. These chemicals play a critical role in protecting the function of the macular pigment in your eyes, which filters out the sun’s harmful rays. Eggs, broccoli, and spinach, are also excellent sources of these antioxidants.

In addition to its 95% water content, cucumbers offer skin-friendly minerals including potassium, silica, and magnesium. You’ll also find this food stabilizes blood pressure, reduces cholesterol, flushes out toxins, aids in digestion, and stimulates weight loss.

This nutrient-rich fruit is a great source of Vitamin C and folate. While Vitamin C protects the body from cell damage and helps tissue repair itself, folate is crucial for the growth of new cells. Strawberries are also perfect for increasing your fluid intake as each one contains about 91% water.

Whatever you do this summer, make certain you eat foods that promote health and help reduce the risks of skin cancer. A healthy body and mind will ensure you’re feeling fit and fabulous even in the blazing heat.
