While many of us focus on a good workout routine and healthy eating, we often forget to scrutinize our posture. Yet, the correct positioning of our spinal column is key to maintaining a strong, stable, and healthy skeletal structure as we age. With that in mind, let’s look at the effects our posture can have on our physical and mental wellbeing.

The Effects of Bad Posture

Although we may not necessarily pinpoint bad posture as the cause of certain ailments, the reality is it can create several health issues. Besides neck and back pain, poor or awkward positioning for long periods can lead to hindered digestive processes, deep depression, bad circulation, increased stress, and a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Thankfully, simple correction exercises can help you prevent or reverse many of these problems.

The Effects of Good Posture

Adopting the right sitting and standing positions can prevent the deterioration of ligaments and vital muscles that ensure flexibility and balance, as well as promote strengthening of the spinal column. Excellent posture practices also help maintain the natural lumbar, thoracic, and cervical curves of the back. Maintaining these curves will help you avoid injury, pinched nerves, and other debilitating conditions.

If you notice that you have terrible posture, consider visiting a physical therapist or hiring a personal trainer to help you complete the recommended exercises correctly.  Depending on the severity of your physical condition, you may need a back brace or similar device. Whatever you do, be careful when consulting a chiropractor for posture problems as the manipulations used can do more harm than good.
