If you’re like most people, your resolve to exercise and eat healthily takes strain during the winter months. After all, who can resist a little comfort food to ward off the cold and satisfy indulgent cravings? The only problem is that once you pack on the weight, you have to get it off again. With summer fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to do just that.

The key to achieving a healthier, leaner physique is following a workout routine that combines the right type of exercises to help you lose weight and get in shape. This usually includes programs that create a good balance between anaerobic exercises and aerobic exercises. While former are rigorous, intense activities that build muscle, tone your body, and increase power, strength, and speed, the latter are low intensity activities designed to burn maximum fat—even after a workout.

Developing muscle should be a goal for anyone attempting to shed weight before summer starts. Muscle finds its energy in calories, which means you’re likely to burn more fat if you have more muscle. Just be careful not to overdo it.

For aerobic exercises, consider rowing, walking, swimming, cycling, or long slow runs. These activities provide a fantastic cardiovascular workout, which improves both heart function and muscle mass. Add in a little weight training to increase your metabolism on a more permanent basis.

Anaerobic exercises include short sprints, push-ups, pull-ups, weightlifting, and abdominal exercises. Working the abdomen is especially beneficial if you want a toned, flat stomach to show off for the summer.

If you’re looking for an activity that incorporates both aerobic and anaerobic training, try kickboxing. Whatever you do, be sensible about your routine so that you don’t get bored with monotonous workouts.
