D rinking isn’t cool, in fact it’s very dangerous for kids, teens and adults alike. Individuals who do drink call non-drinkers“mama’s baby”. Alcohol is a drug, and once you are hooked, turning back isn’t an easy thing.

I know it’s easy for kids to get the wrong message about alcohol. They might see their parents drinking or watch TV commercials that make drinking look like a lot of fun. You might see people drinking and watching sports together or having a big party. But alcohol is actually a depressant. That means it’s a drug that slows down or depresses the brain. Like many drugs, alcohol changes a person’s ability to think, speak, and see things as they really are.

What problems emerge from drinking too much alcohol?

  • Serious liver problems
  • Pancreatitis -severe inflammation of the pancreas
  • Mental health problems, including depression and anxiety
  • Muscle and heart muscle disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Damage to nervous tissue
  • Some cancers -mouth, gullet, liver, colon and breast.
  • Obesity
  • Alcohol dependence (addiction)
  • Not going to do well at school (your future depends on your education)

A sip will turn into a once off occasion. A once off occasion will lead to something more regular and so the cycle begins. There is absolutely nothing fun about facing the above mentioned problems. Something to think about when you are tempted to drink is that a person who starts drinking alcohol at a young age is more likely to develop alcoholism. An alcoholic has little control over his or her drinking and can’t stop without help.

Say no to drinking no matter how tempting it is to try alcohol. It’s normal to be curious about new things, especially if it seems like everyone is doing it. But everyone is not drinking alcohol. Don’t believe it if someone says you’re immature for not drinking. You’re actually more mature because you’re being strong and smart.

I know it is very hard to oppose or to overcome pear pressure. Being true to yourself has a good yield at the end as you are going to live long and healthy life. You can lose your so called friends through the process. Good friends won’t stop being your friend just because you don’t want to drink alcohol. If you feel this kind of pressure, talk to someone you trust.

If you might feel concerned about a friend who’s drinking; advise them to stop before it’s too late. If he or she wants to stop and needs your help, do what you can to assist.
