Pregnant Mother, Teddy Bear, Stuart MilesIt is essential for pregnant women to have a balanced diet, which consists of food that contains carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and proteins. Taking vitamin supplements are another way to ensure that pregnant women receive the daily-required nutrients and support the baby’s growth and development.

It is important to remember that pregnant women should only use vitamin supplements if recommended by a doctor or prescribed by a health care practitioner.

So we know about vitamin C helps to build a stronger immune system and vitamin E helps the body form and use red blood cells, but which vitamins are beneficial for pregnant ladies?

All pregnant women need lots of Iron (much more than the amount of iron a non pregnant woman requires) because of the increase in the blood volume. Iron can be found in poultry, eggs, red meat and dried fruit.

Healthy Orange, Vitamin And Mineral Tablets,  Maggie SmithCalcium is important for the growth and development of the fetus so pregnant women should eats lots of cheese, ice-cream, salmon and drink lots of milk (milkshakes will do).

Folic Acid plays a vital role in the baby’s cell development and can be found in whole grains, peas, peanuts and citrus fruits.

Here are a few additional important vitamins, which should or can be used during pregnancy:

1. Vitamin A helps teeth and bones grow and can be found in milk, eggs, potatoes and liver.

2. Vitamin D helps the body use calcium and promotes strong teeth and bones. It can be found in wheat germ, milk, vegetable oil and spinach.

3. Vitamin B1/Thiamin regulates the nervous system and can be found in organ meats, eggs, rice and pasta

4. Vitamin B6/ Pyridoxine helps form red blood cells and helps with morning sickness. This vitamin can be found in chicken, fish, carrots and bananas.

5. Folic Acid helps support the placenta and prevents neural tube defects. This vitamin can be found in oranges, strawberries, beets, pasta and nuts.
